LI Jingyuan was born in China, but his musical journey has taken him around the world, spending time living in Beijing, Geneva, and London.

About

The music of Jingyuan is profoundly influenced by surrealism, haute couture, and literature. It is powerful with tension and dramatic conflict, yet also demonstrates elegant and poetic effects in sound. His unique talent in composing opera and music theatre is highly regarded by the renowned composer Sir George Benjamin. The sophistication and drama in his musical language is perfectly illustrated in his opera piece Jigokuhen, which stood out from the 500 works of opera and music theatre and received the triennial Music Theatre Now Award in 2018.

Jingyuan has composed various genres of music for opera, orchestra, chamber music, fusion chamber music, solo, theatre, and so on. He has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as Klangforum Wien, Asian Art Ensemble, China Youth Orchestra, Eensemble XX Jahrhundert, Lontano Ensemble, National Theatres of China and Greece, and his works have been performed in the Konzerthaus Berlin, China National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing Modern Music Festival, and Shanghai International Arts Festival. Moreover, he has founded Ensemble Novel, the first contemporary music ensemble in Mainland China, and has been advocating and promoting contemporary music in China in collaboration with top brands such as SONY, NetEase, and Cartier.

Education

Jingyuan received his bachelor’s and master’s degree at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, and studied composition under Michael Jarrell at the Haute École de Musique de Genève. He is currently a PhD candidate under the supervision of Sir George Benjamin in London.
